Tennis time: The French Open 2009

For tennis fans, the race is on to secure tickets for this year’s French Open, which begins on 24th May for two weeks of world-class clay court action.

Photobucket

Played in the beautiful surroundings of the Bois de Boulogne at the Roland Garros tennis complex, the French Open, one of the four prestigious tennis Grand Slams, represents the pinnacle of the European clay court season, and is one of France’s biggest sporting events.

Photobucket

Steeped in tradition, this annual tennis fest presents the perfect excuse for a spring time break in Paris, and even for those who are not dedicated followers of the game, it’s a chance to follow Parisien fashionistas, sport giant sunnies, dress to impress and join the throngs to watch the live action.

Photobucket

Demand for tickets is sky high, so it’s advisable to book well in advance. Prices start at €27.50 for a decent seat, but leftover tickets can be bought at the stadium two weeks before the games start and are due to be released this week in the UK.

Photobucket

Choose between the Chartrier and Lenglen stadiums to watch some of the biggest stars of clay court tennis and stroll on some of the outside courts to just soak up the atmosphere.

Photobucket

And much like Wimbledon, it’s cheaper to go and watch the unseeded players on the smaller courts – you’ll still get a flavour of the event and you could be seeing the stars of the future.

The hot dates: 24 May – 7 Jun 2009 – Stade Roland Garros

PV-Holidays: Ooh la la…it’s the French Poetry Festival

When it comes to attractions of the theatrical, arty and intellectual kind, the French know how to put on a show.

And for those with a love for the lingo, the works of Baudelaire and Hugo or simply fancy rubbing and shrugging shoulders with bone fide French poets, March is the month to visit.

Photobucket

The annual Printemps des Poetes, – Poets’ Spring Festival – is already in full swing but you’ve still got time to book a cheap flight to France and come and join the arty party.

Photobucket

This March, France’s major cities, including Paris, Lyon and La Rochelle are all taking part in the festivals. First created 20 years ago to hurry along the arrival of Spring with a flurry of positive words, the festival has now expanded to incorporate a wide range of events including exciting programmes of theatre and music, as well and spoken word performances.

Photobucket

Paris, in particular, goes mad for the festival, with 5000 different events taking place in various streets, cafes, schools and museums of the capital.

Words of passion, love, betrayal and angst are everywhere: on lamp posts, walls, on busy streets, on trains and on metro stations. These large displays of poetry excerpts will appear from nowhere, making a lovely addition to your sightseeing around town.

Photobucket

If in Paris, also swing by Shakespeare & Co. A writers’ haven, it’s situated on the Left Bank, and is one of the most popular bookshops in the city, known for offering writers across the world in-house residences. This means they can come to stay, and sleep in the shop, whilst they write and read their way through the massive in-house collection. Expect to be inspired!

In Lyon, arts centres and libraries open their doors and bring amateur poets literally onto the streets. Expect to find road-side readings, and interactive workshops galore.

Photobucket

The theme in Lyon this year is “In Laughter” meaning poems won’t be all doom and gloom and tales of lost love, but light-hearted yarns accompanied by lots of physical comedy and fun workshops. There will also be a Jean Tardieu exhibition.

Photobucket

In La Rochelle, expect a more interactive vibe, as many workshops and discussions will be taking place all over town.

If you do decide to delve into the minds of great French scribes, make sure you leave time in the evening to eat, drink and be merry.

Photobucket

Choose a pavement-lined café and recite your favourite verses over a carafe of wine or two.

Afterwards, lay your weary head at one of the 11 P&V self-catering apartments in Paris. If you stay three nights, prices are currently 50% off, with some apartments as little as 48 euros per person, per night.

Photobucket

If you are exploring La Rochelle, stay at the Residence Maeva Centre , which has recently been renovated and sits in the bustling Bastion Saint Nicolas district. Take a dip in the pool at the end of your literary day. Grab a studio apartment, which sleeps two for just 94 euros.

What’s French for staying up all night on the razz?
Our friends across the Channel call it a ‘Paris Nuit Blanche (white night). And on one night of the year in Paris, partying in the streets, dancing ‘til dawn or simply putting the world to rights over a vat of red wine or two is quite literally de rigueur.

Photobucket

First launched in 2002, Paris Nuit Blanche has become a hotly-anticipated annual celebration when, for one night only, the city’s museums, galleries, monuments, cinemas, bars, clubs, parks and even swimming pools stay open all night.

This year’s event takes place on Saturday 4th October, and in keeping with tradition, the city’s top attractions from the Louvre to Musee d’Orsay not only stay open ‘til dawn but entry is free.

Photobucket

This access all areas extravaganza turns Paris into a night time playground complete with dazzling light shows and special illuminations of the landmark attractions.

The party, which kicks off at 7pm and winds up at 7am on Sunday morning, also features an exciting programme of special events, including street performances, concerts and contemporary art installations.

This year’s art focuses on the city’s main train stations. The major railway hubs of Gare du Nord and Gare du Lyon will be transformed with artistry and video projections on the concours, facades and platforms.

Photobucket

And just when you start to flag, another treat is in store. At dawn, each district’s city hall, local associations and shopkeepers organise breakfasts for those who lasted through the night.

Photobucket

Last year, more than 600,000 night owls came out to play, and this year’s party is expected to be an even bigger affair.
